"Blackburn Hospital A&E failure"

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My husband was in a serious car accident. He was cut out of the car by the fire brigade and rushed to A&E at Blackburn.

On arrival there were at least 5 or 6 people on trolleys waiting to be seen. He was put in the queue and waited for nearly 2 hours whilst strapped to a board.

When he was eventually lifted off the board a doctor checked his spine briefly. This was nearly 4 hours after the accident. His obs had not been done since the accident scene even though his blood pressure was very very low and pulse very high.

He was left on a bed in A & E for another hour until another doctor came to have a look at him. No obs were done. The doctor told him he may have cracked his kneecaps. Struggling to walk, he was sent by foot to xray where he sat very uncomfortably for a further 2 hours.

Even though the staff were brilliant and worked very hard, it seemed clear that they couldnt cope with the number of people needing medical attention.
