"The kindness shown to my Dad at Hairmyres"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Cardiology University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I believe in this day and age it is all too easy to complain about services, however I also believe that Thank You seems to be too hard to say.

My Dad has been in and out of Hairmyres Hospital, for the best part of the year, due to Heart Failure - this has caused water retention which has been very difficult to move and has been a problem to all the specialist.

Since April my day has only been home for about 6 weeks, this has been made up of 4-5 days here and there.

Every time he has been admitted he has been dealt with, with nothing but kindness and care. This is from the start at A&E through to ward 2 and then on the longer terms Ward 9. During his later stays he was admitted directly to Ward 9, where the staff always greeted him and welcoming him by name. During his stay the hospital was clean and tidy, the staff were always well turned out. Every time you asked a question you might have been told I will get back to you - which they did, or they got someone more senior to answer the questions in regards to care.

During my Dads last couple of weeks of life the staff could not have been more helpful, moving my Dad out to a side ward and informing us we could visit as and when. In the last week the staff made sure we were always comfortable and had the odd cup of tea (which is above and beyond the call of duty in my eye), as he neared the end if any of us had to leave his bed side the staff actually sat with him until our return. Such kindness should be rewarded - but instead what I did see was the general public and patients being nuisances, I do not obviously mean everyone.

I wish to express my thanks to all the Staff at A&E, Ward 2 and especially Ward 9. When I mean staff I also include the Doctors as they seem to be forgotten.

These people have a hard job and when I stayed at the hospital for extended visiting you start to realise that they do very long shifts and are constantly on their feet.

Thank you again - from the family of Alex Mitchell - died on 6th September 2010.
