What I liked
once she was diagnosed my mother in laws consultant was brilliant and gave her lots of support through her surgery
What could be improved
my mother in law was repeatedly mis diagnosed, one time in a corridor by a young doctor who got her to open her mouth so he could peer in, he told us he couldnt see anything and implied she was a silly old woman and it was all in her head. She was already down to five stone by this time because the lump in her throat was stopping her eating. numerous times her throat cancer was missed.
at the end of her life she was put in a ward with lots of people in a similar state to her, most had lost bowel and bladder control and needing lots of care. there was one trained nurse and what appeared to be a trainee. they just couldnt cope with the work load, how ever hard they tried. my mother in law was left sat in her own crap for hours, stinking and sore. the nurses themselves were doing their best but just didnt have enough hands to get round everyone. the night she died we had visited her and once again she was sat in her own waste. a few hours later we got the phone call to say she had gone, and her sons went straight through to the hospital, to find her dead, sat in the exact same position as shed been in when they left, still sat in her own mess. no dignity even in death.
Anything else?
my fathers mum died of old age in hull royal, he got a phone call to say what happened and he went straight to the hospital. twenty mins later when he got there the body had already been removed from the ward and sent to the morgue. he wanted to see his mum but the nurses, reception, doctors no one knew where the morgue was!!!! he wandered round round for nearly an hour and a half , very distraught and asking any member of staff he saw if they knew where the morgue was....none of them did. eventually he gave up and went outside to leave, by chance he saw a paramedic and asked him. this man was able to direct straight to where he wanted to be. What an awful situatiuon to be put in, can you imagine if it had been a child in a road smash and the parents couldnt find the morgue...its completely unaccepable for grieving relatives to be put through this, its cruel and traumatic. why doesnt main reception know where to send people, or the nurses station on each ward..
