"I feel my Nan wasn't cared for properly"

My Nanna died last year, a few days before xmas. She wasn't the healthiest elderly woman you've ever seen, but she was independent and did a lot for herself. She had problems with her kidneys for a while.

One day she was shopping around Morrison's, the next my mum finds her ill on the sofa, she left her thinking it's maybe the flu. After 2 hours of no improvement she called an ambulance and got rushed to Chorley & South Ribble hospital.

I can't remember the ward names. She was in an intensive care type ward for about 4 days. She was really really ill. They stopped her food intake because of some swallow test, and she wasn't allowed anything to drink.

She got moved onto a normal type ward. After 5 days on that ward she was still on oxygen and nil by mouth. 2 more days pass. Nil by mouth. They only had a drip into her arm. She kept asking for water. But the nurses refused. It was because she had a dry mouth.

The day I visited she was very ill, and kept stopping breathing. I told the nurses. They replied "she's deteriorating, what do you expect, go away". I feel that just because she was old they abused her situation. If I wasn't so upset to basically be told "let her die" then I would've screamed in their faces.

She died eventually. After no food for about 9/10 days.

I believe the reason my Nanna died was because of a lack of care provided by the NHS hospital. I feel they abused my Nanna's rights as a human being, and her rights to eat/drink. I believe it's neglect and emotional abuse.
