"The paramedics and the first aiders were..."

What I liked

The paramedics and the first aiders were extremely good and got me from Tresco to St Mary's as fast they could after I tripped and fell while walking on the headland. They were very careful not to disturb my arm.

What could be improved

The lack of staffing of an X ray facility during the holiday period which to be honest led to a complete misdiagnosis of the severity of my injuries by the doctor and nurse on duty.

They both said I had suffered severe cuts and bruises. In fact they missed a triple fracture to my upper arm and shoulder which only emerged a week later when I returned home to Hertfordshire. I was referred to casaulty at Watford General Hospital and the medical staff had to get me an emergency admission. I had a five hour operation including inserting a metal pin and plate to re-align the fractured bones, including my humerus. I have still not fully recovered now.

Thank you for your comments and would like you to know we take all concerns seriously. We now have a new digital x-ray, although the Isles only have a radiographer once a week. Extending access to a radiographer is work in porgress and is being looked into by the Kernow Clinical Commissiong Group and the Islands Health and Well Being Board. With regards to staff training, MIU training up-dates are provided twice a year by the MIU Lead. She will revist limb examinations on her next visit.
