"Lack of help or care after my operation"

I went for my operation at Tameside nhs hospital in ashton-under-lyne.

I was given the appointment time 8 o'clock in the morning but they operated me 2:30 in the afternoon. i had to wait for my turn for more than 6 hours.

After my operation i was not treated or looked after properly. The nurses I met on ward 16 were not kind and helpful at all. I was in pain and i was trying to call the staff but no one was listening to me.

The doctor after my operation said that the district nurse will come and see you at your home when you will be discharged from here. When i rang the district nurse she said we won't be coming to see you at your home you will have to come to see us in clinic. I said i was told by the doctor in hospital that nurse will come to see you and she will do your bandage as well. the nurse said "o they just say that to any patient but we don't visit".

When getting discharged from hospital i was not even given my medication properly. I was told to come and collect my medication on monday but when my sister rang the ward on monday they said the medicines are not ready ring in the evening. When i rang in the evening they were still not ready. Even the next day i was told thay are not ready.

I was told to leave my number with them and they will ring me but they never did. I was in so much pain i could not do anything myself or look after my children. i was struggling to do everything. my wound was not getting healed properly. it started to bleed. i rang the district nurses, they were not helpful at all. i begged them if they could come and see me at my house but they said thay can't come to see me i would have to go to see them at their clinic.

I was in so much pain i took the taxi and had to take my three kids with me to see the nurse and change my bandage. when i got there they said to me that i am not on their appointment list they can't see me. i begged and said please see me i am in a lot of pain. She said ok i will quickly see you i need to get somewhere quickly. i said but i was told that i can come she said well i don't see you on our list.

she quickly and not properly checked me without giving me any advice or bandages. in few minutes then she told me that i can go home now. she was not helpful and kind at all.

My experiences with Tameside hospital have always been very bitter, with no care or kindness in them.

Thank you for posting these comments. I am very sorry that your experience at the hospital was unsatisfactory.

It has been difficult to investigate your concerns as we are unaware of your identity. If you could provide your details to me I will be able to undertake a more specific review. However, if you do not wish to do so you are clearly not under any obligation.

Unit Nurse Manager Sr Doyle has looked at the issues you have raised, and like me was disappointed that your concerns had not been pre-empted, or failing that dealt with at ward level. We would both wish to apologise for your experiences, which did not meet the standards we would expect for our patients.

Ward 16 is on of the very few old fashioned “nightingale wards” in the hospital, which gives very high visibility of most of the patients. Staff are available on the ward at all times and should be able to respond to any requests from patients and deal with her pain control.

I am afraid I cannot comment on the response of the district nursing service, which is the responsibility of Tameside & Glossop PCT (NHS Tameside & Glossop). The ward makes referrals to this service in appropriate circumstances using the systems prescribed by the PCT. The ward would not be aware of any problems unless the patient contacts the ward for advice.

In the absence of some key pieces of information, it is difficult to know why you were discharged without appropriate medication The surgical unit has a “take home cupboard” for discharge medications and provided these had been were prescribed could have been provided to you directly to prevent delays. Also this should have been appropriately communicated to the other staff to prevent any further problems.

Sr Dolye has raised this posting with her staff so that they can learn from it.
