I was admitted to Arrowe Park Hospital at 40 weeks pregnant with too much amniotic fluid which prevented my baby's head engaging. At 41 weeks I had a c-section as she was still in an unstable transverse lie. My daughter emerged perfectly, as planned, then things went wrong.
My placenta had adhered through to the muscle, a rare condition known as "placenta accreta" which occurs in about 1 in 2500 births. I haemorrhaged and lost 4 litres of blood.
I was on the table for 3 hours and as I was under a spinal block I was conscious for a large part of the time. My consultant, the fantastic Akin Famoriyo called in another consultant, Pauline Green, and together with the other superb staff in theatre that day, they managed to save both me and my uterus.
I cannot sing their praises highly enough. As I sit and look at my beautiful daughter, I know that if it wasn't for them, she wouldn't have her mummy today. My thanks also go to midwife Dot Moore for looking after my husband and baby whilst they stabilised me, and for then looking after me in recovery. We will never forget her kindness.
