"I'd had the blood test done ..."

About: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (King's Lynn)

What I liked

I'd had the blood test done in the morning as part of my kidney clinic as usual. Dr called me an hour or so later and said they want me to come in as my potassium levels were dangerous. I was seen straight away and identified why I was there, placed on a bed and waited, and waited and waited from about 3pm until 8pm when I was then placed on a ward where my bloods were taken again. I kept asking if the results were OK can I go home, but it was gone midnight before I got results and they said I could go home, all was normal and not sure why the reading was high.

Busy hospital but not so good on sorting things out. If I had a simple blood test again on arrival I could have had the results within the hour and been on my way instead of taking up valuable resources, in an already busy hospital and ward. Wasting my time and theirs.

What could be improved

Better initial checks on reason for admittance, especially as blood tests are very simple and quick to conduct.

Anything else?

There was an emergency in the bed next to mine, guy went in to cardiac arrest and the crash team were spot on, no fuss and had the old feller sorted again in minutes. Took it all in their stride, so well done for that.
