"Long wait for our child at Bolton Royal Infirmary"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital / Paediatrics

(as the patient),

Our child was a patient in Ward B1 at the Bolton Royal Infirmary. Referred by our GP as an urgent case at 10.20 in the morning, and were told that a bed would be available from 12.00. When we arrived at 13.00, a bed was still not available and so our child had to wait in the playroom until 16.00, and was finally admitted at 18.30. I was very angry to have to wait for 2 and a half hours before given a bed for our child. In total, we waited for 3 and a half hours before seeing a doctor. I was disappointed, not only with the waiting, but also with the cleanliness of the room and the facilities for a parent staying with their child.

We fully understand how distressing it can be for patients and their relatives to wait longer than anticipated -- especially if children are involved --- and we would like to apologise for this. However, the bed situation can change rapidly, for instance if children come in whose condition makes them more of a priority for a bed or a doctor's attention. Our playroom is also a waiting room and while we accept that space is limited, it can help to distract some children. This room is cleaned daily but the high volume of children and relatives that use it mean that it quickly becomes untidy. We are currently planning new accommodation for children and their parents which will address a number of the issues you raise.
