"Difficulty with disabled parking at Ormskirk hospital"

About: Ormskirk & District General Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I went with my husband for his regular heart check ups at Ormskirk hospital. I can't fault the hospital at all, his care there has always been great. But the car parking is terrible! I am disabled and walk very slowly with a stick. Whenever we visit the hospital there is never one space near the entrance, we have to walk the whole length of the hospital to get in. The disabled spaces are always full (not one space!) and there aren't blue badges in the cars. Is anyone checking? People who don't need them seem to be taking up these spaces. I am an old woman and it's too much to walk all that way.

Dear Leaf62,

We are aware of the problem you raise, but unfortunately because the disabled spaces are in various locations across the site, we are not able to patrol all of them at the same time. However, if a car is found to be parked in a disabled space without displaying a blue badge we will place a large sticker on the windscreen to remind the driver that they are wrongly parked. After investigation, if we find the car belongs to a member of staff, both they and their line manager will be informed and appropriate measure taken.

In addition, over the last few weeks the problem has unfortunately been exacerbated because of work being done to improve one of the main car parks on the site. This has been surfaced with tarmac, spaces have been marked out and new lighting installed. When this is completed by the 11 February, there will be approximately 80 additional spaces, nine of which will be for the disabled. We hope that when this car park is fully open it will alleviate some of the problem, although unfortunately there will always be some who will ignore the disabled designation.
