What I liked

visiting my sister every day for past 3 weeks while she's beein ICU, HDU and now in E4. Each day smokers stand to the side of main entrance and theri cigerette smoke drifts up through open windows. I have put a note into PALS and keep mentioning it to reception staff. If RBH has been recognised as a no smoking site it should carry through with it's promises. Smelling smoke when your in hospital feeling poorley is just awaful.

What could be improved

Keep to the no smoking site conditions or at least move smokers over to the garden area away from the main entrance or near by areas.

Thank you for your posting. As you know the hospital operates a 'No Smoking' on site policy, and we are trying our best to influence and encourage those members of the public who continue to smoke on site to refrain from smoking. Our Health Promotion Specialist and managers do approach people and request that they extinguish their cigarettes and we offer advice on smoking cessation. I do appreciate the distress this causes to patients in wards directly above this area - we will look to focus on this area in the next few weeks and at least try to avoid the problem of smoke drifting up into the wards above.

There is overwhelming evidence about the harmful effect on individuals' health from smoking and as a 'health promoting hospital' we believe we should take a lead in promoting healthier lifestyles. The policy on smoking is a public health message and something that we hope people will comply with as it assists in tackling one of the major causes of ill health. We want to continue to work with our patients, visitors and staff in our efforts to provide a healthier environment for all.
