"Maternity Care during and after birth in Preston Royal"

About: Royal Preston Hospital

(as the patient),

Whilst in labour for the fourth day with my son, I was cared for by brilliant midwives. However, the doctor on duty whilst being very nice, kept my labour going for twelve hours, on the fourth day, until finally taking me to theatre for surgical intervention by ventouse. This ended up in a emergency c-section where my uterus haemmoraged through being so tired and weak. I think this would never have happened if actions were taken sooner. I had 6 units of blood afterwards and was in severe pain with a drain from my stomach. I still have bruising and pain 8 months on. I was cared for on the delivery suite for the following night where they allowed my husband to stay with me, however once this care was taken over by the ward there was a shocking difference. I was in distress being so weak and in pain. I asked for a room on my own several times, which I never got. My husband had to shower me as I was unable to do this myself and was covered in blood. I wasn't breast feeding as I was unable to do so, so midwives help was then of a minimum. I had to ask for someone to bathe my baby which they did, only because they "found the time"! This experience along with the lack of care from health visitors etc at home, has seriously affected my desire to have any other children. This is a shortened version of events and feelings but it should not happen!
