"first i turn up at fracture clinic, ..."

About: Furness General Hospital

What I liked

first i turn up at fracture clinic, in my wheelchair, and was sent for a Xray, with plaster still in place, despite me questioning this repeatedly,

needless to say, the Xray was a waste of time, and from arriving to being asked to have a new Xray had taken over 2 hours,

i had to refuse as i had another hospital appointment,

so then they wanted to send me home in pain, with no support for joint, for a whole week!!!!

finally got a sort of removable plaster

then i go to other appointment, in wheelchair, arm in plaster, and dispite GP's and your website advice,

Dr states that no treatment is needed,

The doctor then went on to state, and i quote 'you are very overweight and need to exercise'

if i could exercise i would not be in a wheelchair!!!

The doctor further went on to state (when raised by me) that the doctor does not know what BMR (base metobolic rate) is or what calories are, really!!!

and the doctor also ignored the fact that i told them i had managed to lose 1.5 stones in the last year despite my mobility problems

i am surprised that the doctor did not also try to blame my problem on weight and smoking, in which case i really would have made a complaint on the spot, having giving up smoking several months ago now

What could be improved

well firstly making sure that everything is correct, in the first place, after i questioned that the plaster was being taking off before Xrays, this should have been checked, and even if i had got past this, surely the Xray department should have questioned it, i may not be a doctor or nurse but having just completed my BSc i knew this was wrong, and a waste of time, why did the 'professionals' not pick up on this

as for the second doctor, well i am fairly speakless about how little they appear to know of basic medical knowledge, or how to be disability aware, and so the doctor and therefore hospital, (due to the doctor's actions and comments) are ignoring the DDA

at the least the doctor should have asked why i needed a wheelchair, and so know that it would be almost impossible to exercise, mind having said, basic common sense should have told them this just by me being in the electric chair!!

Anything else?

to not ask to start why i was in the chair, then insist that i need to exercie better, and having said this, when asked how i could lose weight quicker, the doctor had no answer at all!!!

when i mentioned that due to my studies at Nottingham Queens medical centre last year, where during lab time, i carried out experiments to find both my BMR and calorie intake at rest, and so have halved this,

i have to see this doctor again in 3 months, i am very tempted to cancel the appointment due to their attitude, but if i do see them, and get a similar reaction from them, i will be making a official complaint
