"Too long to wait without food and drink"

About: Rotherham Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I went to Rotherham Hospital and stayed on Sitwell ward. I had a problem with my bladder. The standard of care was very good.

I think that the time that I had to wait without food and drink was too long. I arrived at 7.30am and at 3.00pm I was taken to theatre. I had nothing to eat or drink from 7.00pm the previous night. The theatre times ought to be included with the admission date.

As stated the waiting time should be given with the admission date. It is not very nice to have no food or drink for 36 hours.

However, I would like to thank all of the staff from the cleaners to the surgeons, all were first class.

Thank you for posting your opinion. We are sorry that you went without food and drink for such a long time; and can only apologise as there appears to be some mis-understanding in communication.

Patients who are booked in for surgery of any kind visit our Pre Assessment Centre in order to ensure they are fit for sugery. At this time patients should be given instructions for fasting. Patients should also receive details of fasting instructions by letter when receiveing details of the date & time of their operation.

If a patient is on an all day list we ask that they fast as though their operation is to take place in the morning. This is due to the fact that on occasions we have to change the list around a little on the day itself (some patients may be ill of the day of surgery for example) and we need to ensure that all patients are ready for theatre.

As a general rule we would advise that a patient should go without food for 6 hours prior to the operation and without water for 3 hours.

Thank you again for raising this issue, we will take your comments on board and try to stop this happening to other patients.
