"excellent birthing experience"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I had planned a hypno water birth in the Midwife Unit and planned to be in and out within hours to deliver my baby after hearing a few negative stories about the Maternity Hospital. However my baby had other ideas and in June 2016 my waters broke at 33+2 so after a frantic phone call to Westburn Ward at 6. 30am where I was asked to wait to come in after 7am until the Nurses had done their handover I decided that my baby wasn't going to wait and headed up to the hospital. At the start I wasn't that impressed with Westburn Ward and had to wait a long time to see anyone by which time contractions had started and my partner had go and look for a Dr who had to be persuaded to come and see me in my state of panic! I think because I wasn't in much pain everyone thought my baby would stay put! However after steroid injections and medication to try and stop the labour they realised my baby was definitely coming so I was whisked round to the labour Ward and from there Midwife Kay and a lovely student Midwife took amazing care of me. I cannot thank them enough for supporting me to give birth without much pain relief and getting my son out safely and then explaining he was going to Neonatal. Kay went above and beyond visiting me on Summerfield Ward every day I was in as she knew how poorly my baby was. She is a fabulous Midwife and an absolute angel. Oh and the food on Summerfield Ward was lovely! I really enjoyed the salads!

The Neonatal Unit were also absolutely fantastic and Susan C, Eilidh, Louise, Sonya and all the other many Nurses who cared for my son were amazing and the Neonatologists who have to make difficult decisions. Other than the freezer breaking down and defrosting my precious ebm and towards the end of my sons stay there was a lack of support with breastfeeding due to the feeding person being off I can't fault the unit because ultimately my son is here because of their dedication and care. I had an excellent birthing experience at AMH and can't thank everyone enough!

Dear LRR

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback and I'm very glad to hear that your son is doing well after his early arrival into this world! It is always challenging to be preparing for one experience and how you were planning to manage your labour then for this to be suddenly turned upside down.

I am sorry that your first experience coming into Westburn was not positive - you should not have felt that you were having to ask for the care you required, I will feed this back to the Senior Charge Midwife in Westburn. Kay will be delighted to receive your feedback - it always means such a lot to our staff.

Again it is good to hear about your experience in the Neonatal Unit - such a difficult and anxious time for any parent. Since you were in the Neonatal Unit they have applied and are working towards UNICEF Babyfriendly accreditation which aims to improve the support for breastfeeding as well as focusing on family centred care.

I will make sure that your feedback is shared with all the staff and teams that you have mentioned.

Jenny
