My brother has severe learning disabilities, physical health problems and cannot clearly communicate. He gets extremely anxious in healthcare settings.
In the past month, he has had to be seen in the A&E department on 3 occasions.
Firstly, as a result of a fit, needing care to a head injury in which we found the nurse practitioner suburb and not being afraid to allow appropriate restraint whilst they quickly put glue on his wound. This was done in a way that caused him minimal distress.
The 2nd occasion was following another fall where again he was promptly treated in A&E with full respect shown to his learning disabilities.
The final occasion was more serious and resulted in a hospital admission. Once again the assessing and treating professionals treated him with dignity and personalized his care.
He was well received by reception staff on all 3 occasions.
The care he received minimized distress to him and reduced the distressing impact he can have on other patients.
We have observed care in other a& e departments in which staff have shown no respect for holistic care of patients with significant learning difficulties nor prioritised them to miminise distress.
Homerton is a model that others can learn from in relation to care of adults with learning disabilities.
