"Care of my 16 year old daughter"

About: Northern General Hospital

The care started with a visit to the walk in centre on 17/04/17 where after seeing a fabulous GP tried to get my daughter admitted to the children's.

This was not to be and we were referred to SAC at NGH.

Immediately it was recognised what a scary experience this was for her, she was treated with care and compassion.

A junior doctor asked a senior doctor to perform examinations on my daughter to prevent them repeating them which I thought was an incredible intuition to have.

The senior doctor explained everything to my daughter reassuring her all the time to ensure she knew what was happening, could concent and accepted my presence through out.

It was decided that my daughter needed admitting for IV fluids, further tests and a referral to the right team to care for her.

As soon as that decision was made the nursing staff on SAC arranged a side room for my daughter so she could get comfortable while she awaited further assessment.

A bed had not been found on the appropriate ward and it was nearing 8pm. My daughter was getting anxious and upset about staying overnight so I approached a support worker to ask if I could speak to the nurse in charge.

The support worker checked if them-self or the nurse looking after my daughter could help so I explained my daughter was getting upset about being left.

Immediately the support worker asked if I was with the young girl which I confirmed, they then explained that due to her age I may be allowed to stay with her.

The support worker went away checked this then them-self and another support worker brought me a fold out bed and bedding, checked if I needed anything and that my daughter was comfortable.

We spent three days and two nights on SAC where my daughter received the most amazing care. At the Start of each shift the nurse looking after her came and said "my name is ..... And I am looking after you today".

All the staff including the support staff put a smile on her face at each contact they had with her which made her first experience of inpatient adult services a little easier.

Each contact although I was present was made directly to my daughter as the patient whilst also including me who as her mum as she requiring lots of support from me.

Each day she was seen by her consultant and their team.

The consultant on first contact explained to my daughter they did transition clinics from children to adult services so completely understood how she was feeling and offered lots of reassurance.

On the 19/04/17 (albeit late at night just as my daughter had fell asleep) we were moved to the right ward for her care. I admit I was not happy about the move so late but in the grand scheme of things was insignificant.

Once on the right ward Robert Hadfield 3 again my daughter received excellent care and support.

ALL THE STAFF who had interaction with my daughter from the porters, the ward staff, medical and surgical teams, X-ray and radiology department treat her with care and compassion. THANKYOU ALL

Thank you Kris for providing such a positive story about your experiences., I hope your daughter is much better now.
Currently, the Trust are doing a major piece of work on the transition process and we have established a Trust-wide Transition group. Recent discussions have been taking place around guidance designed by the Yorkshire &Humber Strategic Clinical Network for Children. The aim is to review the current service provision for transitioning patients within the care group with key staff considering the guidance. The review will consider how we:

provide evidence based high quality care and improve outcomes for children, young people and their families incorporate national and local guidance, guidelines and standards into everyday practice assess the feasibility of a single point of access so that services are designed, developed and implement a patient centred, young people friendly transition

In addition there is now an eLearning module for staff which will be promoted more widely. This focuses on the importance of transitional care and the move from child centred to adult oriented care to ensure that young people and their carers have a positive experience.

Clearly, this work is having a positive impact already on patients such as your daughter and you as her carer. Your feedback will be passed on to senior mangers and to the staff involved who are always delighted to receive such positive comemnts. Thank you for taking the time to publish your views. Kind regards and all the best to you and your family.,
