"diabolical service"

About: York Hospital / Maternity

My waters broke at 3.30am and was seen by a 3rd year student midwife who gave me a 5 minute lecture about needing an ambulance to get to hospital (baring in mind i had a trapped sciatic nerve and couldnt walk) i had no check up and saw only the student midwife who told me i wasnt in labour and sent me home having strong contractions. I stayed home until 6.30pm and ended up in delivery with 2 lovely midwives who where extremely accomodating to me and my partner. my baby was born via forceps and i was taken to theatre where the consultant was fantastic but i had a newly qualified midwife with me for support, who spent the hour grimacing at the surgery and telling me they didnt know what they were doing. I was moved to g2 who failed to listen or act upon my baby not feeding and choking when swallowing, they put this down to excess fluid from birth and treated me like an idiot, my partner had heard them talking about me in the corridor as i was an 'overly worrying mother'. this resulted in them barely answering my buzzer and leaving me with an over flowing cathetre and bedding covered in blood. We eventually where sent home even though my baby couldnt keep a ml down of food and sounded like a chugging train due to mucus build up which turned out to be her milk asperating back into her lungs. We ended up on the kids ward 2 days later with my daughter fighting for her life due to being born with TOFs and becoming septic which 2 peadeatrics and several midwives failed to diagnose. I saw a comunity midwife when my little one was 3 days old who said my lg was fine even though she had jaundice so bad, her eyes where yellow. I would never have another baby in york hospital!

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback.

I am sorry to hear of your experience around the birth of your daughter and that the care you received was not of the level we would expect. I am so sorry to hear that your daughter ended up on the ward fighting for her life and that what should have been a happy time for you and partner turned into a very frightening and worrying experience.

We do take your comments very seriously and would like the opportunity to look into your concerns further.

If you would like discuss this with us, please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01904 726262 or email us at pals@york.nhs.uk and we will be pleased to help.

Kind regards

The PALS team
