"4 month wait and still no answers"

About: York Hospital

I respect the NHS and the staff that tirelessly deal with an increasing work load and have had a great experience with the NHS in Leeds with my son and am extremely grateful for that. However I write this review only to try and highlight concerns I have in the hope that these issues can be addressed in York to provide better care for people. I was referred to the gastroenterology department in December 2016 and had a endoscopy and biopsy taken. In January I had a follow up consultation to discuss the results of the biopsy. The consultant was dismissive and unhelpful with queries and concerns I had in relation to the results. I left the consultation none the wiser - with an understanding that my results were inconclusive. The consultant seemed to be in a rush to get out of the hospital and not that interested in addressing my queries. Due to the inconclusive results I was asked to have some blood samples taken. The blood samples went missing and was asked again to have some more blood samples taken. After having to chase the department on many occasions and 3 months later I was informed that I would get a letter explaining what happened. I am still waiting for that letter and still trying to figure out how I proceed.

My proposal to help with this issue - Provide better information to patients at consultation and a mechism for the patient to follow up with queries they have. This could potentially be an online mechanism where patients can submit queries to their consultants rather than rely on letters being sent out.

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch with us.

I am very sorry to hear of your experience in the gastroenterology department at York Hospital. I am sorry that the consultant you saw was dismissive, that your blood results were lost and that you have still not received the letter you were expecting.

We would very much like the opportunity to look into your concerns in more detail for you.

If you would like discuss this with us, please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01904 726262 or email us at pals@york.nhs.uk and we will be pleased to help.

Kind regards
