On 18th Nov 2009 I underwent invasive surgery to my ankle at Derriford Hospital. On my discharge I was given a flat shoe to protect my dressings which was unfortunately undersize but all that was available. The next day my wife visited Helston Community Hospital to ask for a replacement/exchange. The reception staff refused point blank to help in any way due to the fact that I am a serviceman from the near-by Navel Base. I realise that the hospital is in no way obligated to provide the requested item but I would have thought that some compassion, common sense and helpfulness could/should have been used. At the end of the day despite the fact that I am a serviceman I am still a UK Tax-payer

Response from Helston Community Hospital

The Community Health Services works closely with our military colleagues in offering the same level of service to armed forces personnel as it does to members of the local community.

There are agreed guidelines in place about how those services can be accessed by armed forces personnel. The Medical Centre at Culdrose is the first point of contact for any healthcare enquiries, and if necessary, the Medical Centre team can call upon the Community Hospital at Helston for any additional support.

In this particular case, the item of equipment needed was not in stock at Helston Community Hospital and therefore, would have to be ordered in by Culdrose Medical Centre through their procurement process. The Community Hospital staff at Helston adhered to the guidelines therefore by referring the patient back to the Medical Centre for further assistance. We hope this answers your query.

If you would like to make a formal complaint, please contact the CHS PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service Co-ordinator) on 01209 888200 or via email on pals.community@cornwall.nhs.uk. They will be able to help you further.
