"Noisy ward"

About: King's Mill Hospital / Gynaecology

The ward was busy and I was warned that as it was the surgical assessment unit it would be noisy, one of the HCAs told me they have frequent complaints about the noise and this proved to be the case, staff talked at full volume throughout the night without even bothering to lower their voices or find a room to discuss things in. There was a dirty medicine pot under my chair when I arrived and I had to remind the nurse that I needed a name band and my wedding ring taped as I was going to theatre. I was then asked what I wanted for breakfast and lunch as I waited to go to theatre and a. porter came to take another patient for an appointment, not me!! The staff nurse then failed to complete my theatre checklist and check.me out so when I arrived at theatre they had to be called to come down and complete the necessary documentation. Arriving back on the ward I rarely saw anyone only when they needed to do anything e.g. take obs and I pressed my call bell several times for analgesia and the HCA kept saying that they had reminded the nurse to bring me something although I appreciate they were busy. I felt like I had to keep asking for everything e.g. a jug of water. Staff nurse used same gloves for removing my dressing, catheter and cannulas. I had to ask what my enoxaparin injection was and never saw the nurse wash their hands prior to this. Less than 48 hours following major surgery I was told I was being discharged my bed was needed and I would have to wait in the quiet room to be collected by relatives :( not a great end to my stay. On the plus side the hostess in the morning was great, really pleasant and helpful, went out of their way to provide what you wanted to eat and drink. The theatre porter was also great, very professional, introduced themselves explained what would be happening and even what the equipment was - bed mover and introduced me to the nurse in theatre. All staff were pleasant and introduced themselves.
