I gave birth to my son at Newham and i feel the hospital really deserves a positive review.
From attending antenatal care, to a number of maternity assessment, through induction of labour to actual delivery, i received excellent care throughout.
The NHS gets often criticised for long waits and sometimes for staff attitude (and yes, occasionally you do get unlucky on a busy day or with a grumpy staff member, they are also human after all), but my experience was overwhelmingly of support and rigorous care. I am a very anxious person and i felt staff went out of my way to support me and my baby.
Not once did i have my concerns dismissed, noone ever toldme i was asking stupid questions, and i never felt rushed in appoinments. The midwife looking after me in anyenatal care is quite possibly the loveliest most supportive midwife ever, and the supervisor of midwives also made sure i was looked after, in fact had visited me even through induction and post birth. The maternity assessment and fetal medicine staff were also lovely. I guess one challenge here is that it is always different staff that you see- but the level of handover was rigorous and it was not an issue. They really take their job seriously and no concern dver gets dismissed. My antenatal ward (induction) and labour experience was similar. Modern, clean, comfortable wards and rooms, rigorous care, caring midwives. They were keen to support in whatever they could. Special credit to one of the student midwives who looked after me in induction.
I guess one thing kind of bothered me throughout: having come from a different country, i found the fact that you never actually see the doctors very odd. But what i learnt is thst they are there and all over your case, even if they are not visible, and the one time i really actually needed them (i ended up delivering in the theatre), they were there within moments and looked after me excellently. I guess this system does work in the end!
The labour ward midwives were competent and lovely too. All in all i really recommend the maternity services.
"Wonderful and conscientious care"
