"The staff were excellent"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus / Oncology

(as a carer),

My 80 year mother was diagnosed with a tumour which needed to be removed.

I had been supporting her at the GP appointments for around 6 months prior to this but the GP hadn't been concerned about mum's symptoms and just kept prescribing antacids for a year! Eventually, while waiting to see the GP yet again mum vomited and was sent for an endoscopic investigation at the treatment centre. The staff there were excellent. She was then sent to City Hospital for further examinations and fitness tests and was advised about the surgical operation to remove the tumour. The staff at City Hospital were excellent also since mum was initially seen by a doctor specialising in older people's assessments for surgery. Fortunately mum was deemed fit enough for a pre op and the main operation which both included general anaesthetic! The surgeon decided that at mum's age they would not provide radio or chemotherapy which; we were pleased about. The nurses and doctors on the wards were really good. 15 months on, mum is fully mobile again. We really appreciate the NHS and the staff all do their best under the present circumstances.

Very many thanks. Great news that your mother has made a good recovery and is now fully mobile again. I’ve shared your kind words with staff and with colleagues at the NHS Treatment Centre at QMC (which is managed by Circle, rather than NUH).

With kind regards to you and your mother,

Julian Skoyles.

Divisional Director, Cancer and Associated Specialties.
