"Poor communication on the ward"

About: Cumberland Infirmary / Accident and emergency Cumberland Infirmary / General medicine

(as the patient),

Went to A&E three times in a week due to severe abdominal pains and vomiting The staff nurses in A&E were brilliant much more than can be said about Larch D ward. One senior staff nurse was extremely abrupt with both myself and my wife. Saying firstly to my wife who are you? We don't allow visitors this time of day when all my wife was doing was carrying my stuff up to the ward for me. The second time in the ward I went with no food or water practically all day. If it wasn't for my wife asking for me for some food would have had nothing. Was back on the ward 2 days later where they finally decided to do a ct scan and found I have a bad hernia expected to be released that day but was told they were going to operate on me the day after so went again without food only for them to decide they were not going to operate on me after all. Had to ask on a few occasions for food and drink till I got some. Senior nurse expected me to swallow my painkillers with no water. When my wife came to visit same nurse flung the bed curtain round and asked what the problem was quite abruptly as we are both frustrated with the way things have gone, and we had asked for an explanation. Didn't even put the correct details on my discharge summary letter from the ward as it was just a reprint of a previous days. I think there's no communication between staff and no doubt will be back in hospital with more pains soon. I was made to feel like I was a nuisance and it's all about the bed space

Thank you for taking the time to make us aware of your recent visits to Accident & Emergency and Larch D Surgical Admissions Unit.

I am very sorry that your arrival on Larch D was less than welcome. Rudeness, or being made to feel like a nuisance, is never acceptable even when the staff that are present are under pressure in such a busy department.

The events that you describe are not our usual standard and were clearly very distressing for you.

Your concerns about staff members and the administration of your medication do warrant further investigation but whilst your contact remains anonymous this is difficult to investigate.

I totally understand that this experience must have left you feeling very frustrated and upset whilst you were in so much pain.

If you are unhappy with the care or treatment that you have received you have the right to complain.

The PALS team (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) can help you through this process.

They can be contacted on

• 01228 814008 between 10am and 3pm, Monday to Friday,

• E-mail to PALSCIC@ncuh.nhs.uk
