"Expected more from this hospital!"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I visited NSECH in July 2016 when I gave birth to my first son. 10 days overdue I was booked in for an induction. For 2 days I was turned away as there was no beds for me and I was told I wasn't a priority as I wasn't a high risk pregnancy. I ended up going into labour and visited the hospital where I was examined and told to go home as I was 4cm and they don't admit you until 5cm. I was given 2 codeine(which I didn't know the side effects of when in labour until 8 months after I had given birth) and told to come back if pains worsened. After being at home for 7 hours and in so much pain(yet because I could talk on the phone they wouldn't bring me in)they finally brought me in but said if I wasn't in labour I would be going home. Once admitted my little boys heart rate was in the 40s and was severely distressed,I was dehydrated and had high blood pressure. Luckily my little boy was delivered safely by an amazing midwife. Although they were only with me for 20 minutes before I gave birth, the care I received from them was brilliant which is more than what I can say for the midwife I had previously. The aftercare was amazing and I can't fault that or the care once my little boy was on his way,but leaving women to go 10 days overdue and not have beds to induce them is worrying as anything can go wrong. I'm unsure whether I would go to this hospital again if I was to have another baby.

Dear Madam,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy, this must be a very exciting time for you and your family. However, I was disappointed to read about the experience you had before giving birth; I am sure that it must have been frustrating for you to have been turned away when you had been expecting to come into hospital to be induced, and I can only apologise for your wait during this time.

I am really pleased that the care during and after the birth of your son improved for you, and most importantly that your son was delivered safely. I’m grateful that despite your initial experience you have still taken the time to comment on the amazing midwife that was so supportive whilst you were giving birth, and I can only say sorry again that you didn’t feel that this level of care was given to you from the beginning. I am saddened that you feel unsure as to whether or not you could return to this hospital for another baby, I do hope that you will still consider The Northumbria for your future births.

I’d like me to look into this further for you but due to the anonymity of the post I am unable to comment specifically on your case. Please can you send your details (name and date of birth) to patient.experience@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk if you would like me to investigate in more depth. In the meantime I will be sure to forward your review onto our Maternity team to reflect upon.

Kind regards,

Jessica
