This week my mother was referred by her GP to the A&E department at Queen's with a suspected DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). She suffers from angina and related problems. Both the A&E unit and the AAU unit were staggeringly understaffed of doctors. We arrived at 5.30pm on Tuesday and she was finally seen by a doctor at 10.00am on WEDNESDAY MORNING. By the time we left the hospital, we had been there for 20+ hours. There simply are not enough staff, though all the staff without exception were fantastic. At one point during the evening, food boxes were handed out to people waiting in A&E - this is laughable. Shouldn't the Trust's management giving more priority to recruiting extra staff, and less priority to funding pretty pictures and pianos in the lobby?
