"The doctor explained everything to her"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Medical Oncology University Hospital Wishaw / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 7) University Hospital Wishaw / X-rays and Scans

(as a relative),

My mum had a recent CT thorax which showed her cancer appears to have spread. Both lungs affected and biopsy required to ascertain which type of cancer in right lung. She was reviewed by Dr Lynas and a swift appointment made. Dr Lynas has a clear approach when explaining plans. K Bridges was on hand to provide additional support.

On the day of the biopsy my mother was very anxious. The staff in the medical Day bed unit were pleasant and they had good knowledge of the procedure. The information booklet says if one is very anxious they may have mild sedation. However the staff said this was never given due to the nature of the procedure.

Despite her fear I persuaded mum to go ahead ( the dr offered a different procedure on another day if she felt she really needed sedated). Dr Shenoy explained everything to her and she was absolutely fine during the scan. The radio was a good distraction

Recovery non eventful. A lovely lunch provided to her by very cheery support workers. Home as advised later on in the afternoon.

Dear Firecracker,

I am sorry to hear that your mum's recent scan has indicated that her lung cancer has spread. I am pleased to hear that a swift appointment was arranged for a consultation with Dr Lynas and K Bridges.

Thank you for highlighting the discrepancy between the written information regarding the planned procedure and the actual procedures. I will ask the Senior Charge Nurse to review this to avoid miscommunication for others at what is an anxious time. I am pleased that your mum received a through explanation as it is always important the people understand what is going to happen. I am glad your mum was able to enjoy her lunch and that this was provided by the staff in a friendly manner. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this invaluable feedback.

I hope your mum is keeping well. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experiences despite your mum's diagnosis.

We have reviewed the processes and shared the learning from this with the clinical teams. We always welcome the opportunity to receive feedback and reflect on practice and our processes.

Update posted by Firecracker (a relative)

Thanks but I don't want a 'form' response. I may send a new story at some point. My mother died 9 months ago this week.Meat is processed and peas are processed and therein lies the problem. The establishment has forgotten its individuals that are receiving care. I'm sorry for my emotional answer but we were very traumatised by the 'processes' in general that detracted from her care.

Dear Firecracker,

You have no need to apologise. I am so sorry to hear the sad news that your mum has passed away. I would like to acknowledge the insensitive language used in my updated response. I would like to apologise for any additonal distress that this has caused you, it was truly not my intention. Providing a ‘form response’ or use of language that inferred that we had forgotten that we are providing care for individuals and their relatives was not my intention. The update whilst belated was intended to share with you that your feedback was valuable and had been shared with the teams involved in providing care for indiviudals undergoing this procedure. The booklet that I reviewed states that sedation will not be provided and in hindsight there would have been merit in me establishing the exact booklet your mum was given. Please be assured that it was never my intention to cause you additional distress and that there has been lots of learning and reflection following your feeback submissions.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

Mhairi
