"Septoplasty operation"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Ear, Nose and Throat

I was admitted for a dayCase operation on the 9th March and I have been very underwhelmed by the aftercare i received following my op. I received no discharge information relating to the procedure I had, i.e. What I needed to do to keep my sinuses clear following surgery apart from the surgeon when they initially came to see me briefly mentioning rather quickly a sinus rinse product I would need to buy to irrigate but no mention of how and how often and for how long. Upon discharge I was just given painkillers and nothing more.

My discharge paperwork said splints would be removed in 2 weeks following op and I assumed I would receive an appointment letter for this. By Wednesday 22nd I was concerned nothing had been received so after numerous attempts to contact the Ent reception I finally managed to get through. The receptionist kindly checked for me and after a period of 15-20 mins on hold they finally advised me to come in on the Friday at 10am to have them removed.

On the Friday I attended the Ent clinic and the splints were eventually removed not by the Doctor on call but a senior Nurse. I asked the doctor at the time about aftercare, rinsing, douching etc and whether I would have a follow up with a consultant in the near future to check that post op healing was going well. The nurse simply shrugged their shoulders and said the work there was done. I have felt very Alone as a result of this operation and am now suffering with ear pain and headaches which because I was not briefed before surgery makes me feel like I am alone and forgotten about. I echo the sentiments of the gentlemen who has posted previously about the NHS treating you like a number and the feeling that you don't matter. I now don't know where to turn for help and am.very concerned.

Thank you for getting in touch. I’m sorry that we have fallen short on your aftercare and that you are still feeling pain. I would welcome the opportunity to look into your case so that we can better understand what happened and where necessary learn from this. Would you be able to contact me on 0115 924 9924 ext. 64127 or email me on keith.knox@nuh.nhs.uk and we will arrange a time to meet/talk (depending on your preference).

Kind regards,

Keith Knox.

Head and Neck Matron.
