I had phoned in advance

I simply could not have received worse attention

The staff nurse was reluctant even to view my injury let alone treat it

I attempted on 2 separate occasions to get help and was denied both times

What is the use of a minor injury unit that does nothing?

Patients attending the Minor Injury Unit are triaged on arrival to assess the nature and severity of their injury. We aim to see, treat and discharge all patients within 4 hours of arrival at the unit according to the nature and severity of their presenting injury.

There is a difference between minor injuries and minor conditions such as coughs, sore throats, ear ache and more long standing injuries. Guidance from the British Medical Association indicates that ‘injuries and wounds over 48 hours old should usually be dealt with through normal primary care services’. In this case, the patient was advised to contact his GP.

The nature of Community Hospital Minor Injury Units means that the nursing staff not only work within the unit itself, but during quiet periods, return to duties on their ward areas. In this way, the service can be staffed flexibly reflecting the requirements of a particular day/shift.
