"Stay in hospital as a disabled person"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department University Hospital Monklands / Physiotherapy University Hospital Monklands / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I broke my leg January 2016. I am a disabled person and walk with callipers and crutches. The ambulance service and Doctor at the A & E were fantastic. My problems commenced when I was moved to the orthopaedic ward. The staff were brilliant but I missed having a "monkey ladder" to help pull myself up to a sitting position. Everything is cardboard now, bedpans etc. This makes life very difficult when you have a plaster cast on and are paralysed in both legs when having to use a bedpan.

The physio therapist came the next day with a view to getting me out of bed and into a chair. She asked that I use a zimmer frame (wheels at the front). I explained that I would not feel safe using the zimmer frame. After several attempts to persuade me to use this, it was agreed that I could use my crutches. It felt like the physio did not listen to meat all. My problem is that I felt that going into hospital when already disabled is a terrifying experience and one that I hope I never have to repeat. The nursing staff did listen but the physios did not.

Dear Trishpa,

Thank you for taking the time to send in your comments. It's good to hear that the nurses were brilliant and I am sorry that you did not feel listened to by the physiotherpist. We strive to deliver our care with warmth, kindness and compassion and want to deliver a person centred approach to every patient so I'd like to hear more from you about your experience so we can improve the way we listen and respond in the future. I would be pleased if you could contact me or email me on 07500 793 584, maureen.cochrane@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk to discuss in more detail.

I will make sure that all physiotherapy staff are reminded about the importance of listening to every person they come into contact with.

Kind regards, Maureen
