"Vaginismus"

My problem was picked up at a sexual health check up in Blackburn by a great nurse who when asking me questions about my lack of sexual history at aged 20, noticed my anxiety and worries.

Within 6 weeks I was referred to the blackburn with darwen psychosexual service for my first appointment with Dr Roberts, who is fantastic, understanding and non-judgemental to say the least. Talking about my issues led me to realise I needed this assistance as I was unable to use tampons, or engage in any sexual intimacy or medical examinations because of my physical tensing and reactions caused by vagnisimus, which I had always had since puberty.

Talking led to action and I became able to use tampons, trainers and also touch myself without panic attacks, pain or anxiety. Time made it easier and easier and at aged 21 I met a man and began dating him. I am now able to use tampons happily and will happily have my first smear next year. I am also able to swab myself when going for sexual health checkups. This has made my life so much easier and happier, I do not know what I would have done without the service and without the nurse noticing my issue.

This therapy allowed me to confront difficult issues from my childhood, most likely the cause of my fears and issues and the resulting physical reaction of vagnisimus.

I would highly recommend this fantastic service for people with similar anxieties. It's never too late or too early to get advice and help that may lead you to a more fulfilling life. I am forever grateful to Dr Roberts and all the staff as this excellent service.
