Saturday morning I woke with a painful throat, and being prone to tonsillitis I checked my tonsils in the mirror and could see the left was inflamed and the right was covered in pus.
As it was a Saturday my doctors were closed, and the only other option was to call the out of hour’s doctor which I did. And I was given an appointment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, almost immediately which was great.
Arriving at the RSCH I told to sit down and await the doctor, which I did and was soon called in by a doctor in a very aggressive manner.
I went into the clinic where the doctor asked me how long the pain had been there, which I answered and went on to tell her the last time I had tonsillitis and that I’ve had it so many times, but she didn’t let me speak and just ignored everything I said.
The doctor then went on to say, I did not have tonsillitis and that it was a viral infection (Laryngitis) which was why I had a hoarse voice. Although at this point my left tonsil was still enlarged!
She said there isn’t anything for it, and that she has had the same thing for the past 4 days and I just need to stick it out, she then went on to prescribe “Difflam” which can be brought at any supermarket or pharmacy for less than the national NHS prescription charge! I went on to tell the doctor I already have this and use it very often as I always get inflamed tonsils and a sore throat.
And very aggressively she said “I’ll give you penicillin, as I know that’s what you really want” at this point I had not mentioned penicillin once! She said I’ll give it to you but you shouldn’t take it!
Also when she was checking my temperature, she had no equipment ready and had to rummage thought bags to find stuff which I think is very unprofessional.
Since leaving the doctors, I have indeed used the penicillin which has worked and I feel a lot better, and hope to be referred to the hospital soon to see about having my tonsils out!
But my experience with this particular doctor was awful, and I hope It never happens to anyone else!
"Rude & unsympathetic doctor!"
