"OMG Get me out of here"

About: Campus for Ageing & Vitality

I could not believe this place. It was far from a place of safety. Loud music vibrating through the floors and walls lack of cups and bowls toilet paper and one tv for up to 19 people with mental illness/health (hmp acklington has three yes three full size pool tables and two full size table tennis tables) it was on the news crikey I cant get my head around mental health units and the way in which the people in them are treated. The staff spent too much time playing on mobile phones when patients were left wandering up and down the corridor or reading the paper again and again due to having nothing to do. Doors banging keys ratteling this is all to familiar in these places of no escape once the doors are locked it is almost impossible to remember what the outside feels like anymore you can open a window about half an inch if that to get air you can be taken out with staff watching every move you make because at the end of the day the staff in these units do not trust the people in there and thats the truth. Anyone ending up in here take my advice keep calm stay strong avoid the food if you can (so take your own at least you know what is in it)and the very best of luck. This place is closing soon thank the lord above one less happy days.

Can I take the opportunity to apologise that your experience has been so negative. We strive to be both empathetic and supportive of individuals using our services. It is against Trust policy for staff to use their mobile phones whilst on duty and we will reinforce this.

We also ensure that there are a range of therapeutic activities on offer on all of our wards. I am unsure when your experience took place but will mention some developments that we have made within the last few months. The admission wards at the CAV site now have “chill-out” rooms for services users to relax in and both wards are actively involved in the “Safewards” programme, which is a nationally recognised programme which looks at improving the atmosphere and feeling of safety within the wards. We have also increased the frequency of our community meetings to try and better address issues raised, such as food, as and when they are brought up.
