"A & E visit"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital / Accident and emergency

I was taken to A & E on 6/12/16 following a fall down steps at home. I could not weight bear, on either foot and was in agony. I was eventually seen after 4 1/2 hours and during that time was not offered any pain relief. When I saw the doctor they were very dismissive, saying you wont have done much damage by falling from a small height. I was sent for an x-ray. After a further wait the doctor called across the crowded room, its ok nothing broken. when I went back in to see them they said you need to walk. I was screaming and crying in agony and couldn't only stand with support and couldn't walk. They then said you have a very low pain threshold. eventually they gave me some pain relief and said I could have crutches and a boot. I was fitted with this, not shown how to use the crutches or given any advice on how long to wear the boot or what to do if things didn't improve. I was made to feel I was a time waster. I wore the boot for 2 weeks and saw a private physio which we paid for, who was very concerned re the swelling and lack of movement. after a referral from the physio and a wait to see the GP I was referred for another x ray, this was after 8 weeks. I was found to have a broken ankle. I am still in agony, unable to drive or do things I used to do. so much for being time waster, I and my family who were with me were disgusted with the treatment I received. I hope me or any of my family never have to visit this hospital again.

Dear Lynda

I am so sorry that it has taken me so long to reply.

I am really concerned about your dreadful experience and have requested that A&E to undertake an investigation into your care. If you feel able the Lead Nurse for A&E or myself would be happy to talk to you, please contact Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on pals@bsuh.nhs.uk

I hope your ankle is healing now.

Best wishes

Caroline Davies

Deputy Chief Nurse
