"Left isolated in a single room with no staff introductions"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit

(as the patient),

I have recently had a stay in ward 8 at forth valley royal and just thought I'd share my experience. I am currently in my second trimester of my second pregnancy. I started off in maternity triage where I had super treatment, the nurse who dealt with me was kind, friendly but most importantly reassuring at a worrying time. I was then seen by a Dr who was lovely, She put me at ease and explained all.

I had to be admitted to ward 8 for observation and monitoring overnight, I arrived on the ward at 6 pm the initial nursing staff were friendly, introduced themselves and left me in my single room. My cannula was inserted and my vital signs checked at this time. I was confident that I was in the right place and felt reassured. The curtain was pulled over the door and after this point I didnt see another member of staff until 7:45 am when I buzzed and asked for paracetamol for my pain. If I was due to be monitored for bleeding and observation why did no one check me, monitor my lbs or pain, I know I'm capable of asking if I needed anything but no one asked me about my pain or if I'd been bleeding.

I was given paracetamol and left with out a further check wondering what was next or even a rough plan. The consultant arrived at 12 noon and I was told I was to stay in a further 24 hrs, to be put on a fluid balance check and measured for ted stockings, neither of these were done by the time I left the ward the following day!

All staff who I encountered were pleasant and friendly but I was left isolated in a single room with no staff introductions. often a whole shift would go by and I seen no one, not even a staff nurse / midwife who introduced herself as the day shift or night shift nurse, a blank "hello my name is" white board remained unused with staff names in the room.

The domestics delivering a coffee now and again were a delight to see as they were often the only ones that came by.

In my notes on leaving the unit I read my notes and a few inserts my midwife read, " appears to have slept", or "no reports of bleeding" but no one ever asked me and actually I wasn't sleeping as lay awake mostly but no one ever checked and as for bleeding, I had further small bleeds but again no one ever asked.

I feel the staff are either way too busy or understaffed if on a shift they can't spare a minute to introduce themselves to patients which would instantly make the unit appear more welcoming at often a very worrying time. Such a shame as when they did eventually come near they were friendly. Disappointed

Dear Nickii

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch and leaving feedback about your recent care experience. I was both saddened and disappointed to hear that the level of care you received was not to the high standard that I expect staff to deliver. We always aim to put our mums’ at the centre of everything, ensuring care is planned around them and their baby, this has obviously not happened for you.

I have shared your posting with the Senior Midwife who also agreed the standard of care that you received was not to the level she would expect her staff to deliver, she has asked me to convey her apologies to you and would like to reassure you that your feedback will be used to help improve practice, with a particular focus on the importance of communication and the difference this makes to people when they are in hospital.

I can only imagine how worrying and stressful it must have been for you, and the difference it could have made to you had staff taken the time to come and speak with you and discuss with you any concerns you may have had, it would also give you reassurance that both you and your baby were being well cared for.

I was also sorry to hear that members of the team did not take the time to introduce themselves, as we continually promote the Hello my name is, campaign within the unit. First impressions are extremely important; it helps to build good relationships.

I wonder if you would give us the opportunity to discuss your experience, it would also be an opportunity to talk about your future and ongoing care. I can be contacted on 01324 56484 or alternatively you can email at gail.bell@nhs.net

I hope that you are keeping well, and would like to wish you very best, and hope that the remainder of your pregnancy goes smoothly. It must be such a busy time for you getting prepared for your baby.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest regards

Gail Bell

Deputy Head of Midwifery/Senior Midwife.
