"All in all what a fabulous NHS we have"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as a parent/guardian),

I was at work and got a call from my sons school to say he had banged his head but he was fine. I asked what had happened and they said he could not remember. I thought this was strange and asked my dad to meet me at minor injuries QMH. As soon as I saw him I knew this was much more serious he was confused very upset, acting very out of character and in a lot of pain. They were very understanding and listened to me and arranged an ambulance to accident and emergency at Victoria Hospital. The ambulance driver Jason ( I don't think I will ever forget his name) was so great and calm and constantly assessing my son who was deteriating rapidly. He radioed ahead and we were met by doctors consultants and nurses who all were helping my son who was being extremely difficult. Andrew was treated quickly to relieve the pain and sent for a scan. fortunatley it was clear and he was admitted to the children's ward for observation as no one knew why this had happened to him. I got help for my son when I really needed it. I can't praise the whole team enough from the nurses at QMH who recognised I could not drive my son to VHK safely as we were all in a state. The ambulance crew who kept calm and re assured constantly. The accident and emergency staff who were fantastic and finally the children's ward that looked after us all through the night and the play staff who even managed to let my son leave with a positive note to his hospital admission with a car from the fairy box. All in all what a fabulous NHS we have and I will never forget how wonderful they all are. Forever in your debt and thank you all for being there for all of us! ! ! ! !

Dear Christmas1

Thank you so much for sharing your story on patient opinion. It sounded like an extremely scary experience for you all.

I have found that providing reassurance and support to family members can sometimes be almost as important as the treatment provided to the actual patient. This is especially true when children are involved and so I was really pleased to hear about the calm and reassuring approach taken by the ambulance crew and all of the other staff involved in the care of your son.

I would like to be able to pass on complements to Jason and his crewmate but would need a few more details about the case to allow me to identify them. If you are able to provide some more details you can contact me on 0131 314 0003 or at martinesposito@nhs.net

Finally, what was most pleasing about this story was to hear that your son was given the all clear. I do hope he is recovering well.

Thanks again for sharing.

Take care

Martin.
