"Advice for those in the Liverpool care pathway"

About: Southampton General Hospital

(as the patient),

My mother recently passed away after being admitted to hospital and then under the Gold standard framework offered Liverpool care pathway. I want to ensure people understand fully what their rights are and how they need to protect their loved ones. The LCP is supposed to help a patient through their final days/weeks. The objective is to make a patient comfortable but this is only the case when the execution of the pathway is managed by professionals able to manage the LCP framework. In our cases the nurses engaged had NO idea of the pathway or how it is supposed to help a patient.

The best way to ensure your family is protected if LCP is offered is to seek a agreement from the PCT or hospital in writing to state that their staff are

1. TRAINED

2. Understand their responsibility

3. Have a named nurse engaged

4. A GP or consultant is fully in charge

DO not sign up unless this is given. it is very hard to see a loved one die, please make sure you have asked the right questions.
