"Waiting Times"

About: Derriford Hospital / Plastic surgery Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / General medicine

(as the patient),

In late July 2016, following concerns with lumps which appeared on my chest wall, I was referred, by my GP, for an ultrasound scan at the RCH Turo (Treliske).. This took place in early Sept. As the results were inconclusive, I was further referred, by the radiographer for an MRI scan, which was done early October and further discussion at a specialist case conference, which took place in mid October.

In December, I saw a consultant plastic surgeon, who recommended that the largest lump be removed. He explained that the growth was almost certainly not sinister, although there was a chance that problems could develop later. His main concern was that it could cause issues by pressing on nerves. Operations of this nature take place at Derriford and not in Cornwall.

Early Jan 2017, I visited Derriford Hospital for a pre-operation check. This was carried out in a quick and professional manner.

I am self employed and have been turning down work for fear of not being able to fulfill contracts. As such, having heard nothing for some 4 weeks, I contacted the PALS service at Derriford asking for a possible date. I stressed that was not because I wanted to accelerate the process, I am happy to wait my turn, but merely to enable me to plan my workload.

After 2 further emails and 4 days, I was told that the department concerned could not be contacted. I then pointed out the 18 week rule and asked if alternative arrangements could be made. The reply was that it was not department policy to outsource treatment to other facilities.

Accordingly, I have complained to the hospital. I have no issue with the clinical staff and I appreciate the workload the NHS is under. However, I am appalled by the lack of communication and apparent disregard of the NHS Patient Charter. I appreciate that clinical time and beds are in short supply, but how long does it take to ensure good communication and patient care?
