"Paediatric ENT giving unsolicited insulting dietary advice"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a parent/guardian),

My son has had a swollen throat and ear infections for 6 months following his tonsillectomy in August 2016. He has been given numerous drops and sprays which haven't much helped, although at the moment his ears aren't too bad. His throat is very swollen every single morning sometimes at night and is very painful. He has seen several ENT doctors, and most recently had been seeing a lovely doctor who had been very thorough, kind, and was trying to get to the bottom of what's happening. However yesterday my son saw a different doctor who told my son he was all better.

We explained that his throat was still ridiculously swollen in the mornings (we've even been to A&E because of the pain he was in) and sometimes at night and they just said they didn't know what that was, it looked fine now! They also said my son had to wear an ear plugs when swimming or showering - no idea about where we get this ear plugs from?

The worst part was the end of the appointment where the doctor decided to give me unsolicited advice, in front of my son, saying that he needed to lose weight (repeated numerous times) and stop eating chocolate and sweets! My son was extremely upset and humiliated when he came out of the appointment because of this, and I am furious. I don't want my son's self esteem or mental health affecting by someone who knows absolutely nothing about my son, or his diet, or his other medical issues.

They were an ENT doctor and not a dietary or nutritional expert. They were certainly no psychologist! To top it all my son has woken up with his throat so swollen he can barely speak, yet he has been told he is better. Why is it so hard for doctors to listen instead of judging? Especially when it comes to a child! Six months on he has no relief, he is definitely not better.

Dear Beulah,

I am sorry to hear that you have had such a poor experience and am really keen to discuss this with the team. In order to do this we need further information and so I would be really grateful if you would give us your son's name, address and date of birth and the name of the person you saw or the date of the appointment.

As I will be out of the office for a few days the best way to contact me is to email on jpollard@nhs.net.

Hope your son feels better soon,

Best wishes

Joan
