Nobody found time to help

I was in Burstow High Dependency Postnatal Unit. From the very first night my baby was born I was calling the midwives in to my bedside because baby wouldn't settle after feeding. Nobody made time to look at him feeding. I was fobbed off and told he was cluster feeding. One even shooed me away saying 'what would you have done if you were at home'. Another said 'what are you going to try next then'. They made me feel like a scolded child and nobody believed me that something was wrong. 9 weeks later I found out baby has had tongue tie from birth. This would've been easily observable to a trained professional if they took the time to look in baby's mouth and is the real reason he wasn't satisfied from feeding. He now has to have a minor op which he could have had weeks ago and I've had weeks of doing painful non stop feeding.

I was also very unhappy with the length of time I was kept in after having an iron transfusion that took ten minutes to administer. I stayed in three days and seemed to have been forgotten about. I was given hardly any help from Burstow in this time and was only able to get about four hours sleep despite feeling very unwell. Of all the midwives there was only one who showed genuine compassion. The delivery team had treated me very well so it was such a shame about this ward.

All in all an awful experience to have as my start to being a mum.

Dear Annoymous,

I extremely sorry to hear of your experience and that nobody found time to help you.

Patient experience is important to us and I would really appreciate an opportunity to meet with you to discuss your postnatal stay.

Please can you contact me at adaline.smith@sash.nhs.uk or on 01737 768511 ext 1918 to arrange a time for us to meet. I would be happy to visit you at home if this would be more convenient to you.

Kind Regards,

Adaline Smith Maternity Matron
