"Allergic Reaction"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Urology (Ward 6)

(as the patient),

Last 6 months I was put on a drug in good faith but after few weeks I had an allergic reaction to the drug. I was originally treated a couple of months for a type of skin rash but as it was only getting worse making me ill I had to seek further help and was advised then it was an allergic reaction to this pill, to me proved by simple fact that stopping it stopped the problem from getting worse. After seeing Consultant Dermatologist who advised intense course of treatment matters have improved but I have been advised it could take months for damage done to clear up. I have no blame or fault with the Doctors in front line trying to help me, but I don't think this pill should be prescribed.

Dear Hughie
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience.

I was very sorry to hear of the problems you experienced and the reaction you had to this drug. I do understand that this must have been a very distressing time for you. However, I am sure you will appreciate the risk of an allergic reaction can be a complication of many drug therapies.

That said, I am happy to follow this up through our internal processes including a review of its current criteria and use with the urology service and pharmacy.

If you would like me to investigate further in terms of your own experience please contact our patient services department 01236-713065

Best wishes

Thank you for your response but as I stated in my story I do not find any fault with the Doctor who gave me the drug to use in good faith in an attempt to help me.However having taken drugs for many years, and understand what you state about possible side effects etc, after the reaction and results of it, having read all about this drug and bad reports I just do not see the justification of the NHS using this drug.

I do not have any complaint against anyone at the hospital so I do not see any positive reason for any investigation to take place at that level. The level of investigation into use of this drug with what has been reported about it should be at NHS level as I simply don't understand how it is allowed to be used. I imagine being a patient, at that level it will be stated I have been just unfortunate, but with what I have read I will never accept that argument as too many have complained.

Thank you but I do not want any investigation to take place at the hospital.

Dear Mr Graeme McGibbon I apologise for bothering you again with reference to the allergic reaction with the use of Finasteride, which I still am of the opinion it was given to me in good faith by Urologist. This further contact is not a complaint but as it's nearly 6 months since I started using the pill and it was stopped by my GP after skin damage was done, and I am still receiving treatment for it I would now like to take up your offer of discussing the matter with someone from your Dept when possible. I am a former member of one of the emergency services who had to retire early due to ill health. Since it for many years I had to take pills for Urology problem and this is first time such reaction has occurred in short time taken it has done me no good but contact is not to complain or gain, but after what has been reported about it, why it is still used at all. I am not well just now, not helped by the continued irritation of the skin and Urology problem that I am seeing my GP soon, and returning to Urologist early June. Kind Regards,Hughie.
