"Infection risk and medication errors"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital (Taunton)

(as a relative),

None of the staff gelled their hands before assisting my relative, although there was a stocked antibacterial gel bottle at the end of their bed.

I visited on 2 occasions to see medication (including drip bags, needles and syringes) left unattended on patient mobile bedside tables.

This left me feeling quite disconcerted, as I had previously raised concerns about unsafe management of medication.

Dear AnonymousJK

I am very sorry to hear of your experience when you visited your relative in our hospital. As a Trust we strive to meet high standards of hand hygiene and I am disappointed that you witnessed practice that does not meet those standards. Staff are also trained to understand the importance of medicines management and the risks that could occur when this does not happen. Throughout the Trust we routinely train and monitor the staff for compliance with our standards.

I am sorry that you witnessed episodes where those standards were not being met and I am sorry that you did not feel able to address this at the time. I appreciate it can feel difficult to raise concerns when we have relatives in hospital, especially if you have raised concerns before, but we do appreciate all feedback, good and not so good.If you would like to discuss this further please do call me and I will try to address the points you have raised.

Kind regards

Laura
