"I use singing to try and get my mojo, but sometimes it doesn't work"

About: St Andrew's Healthcare Birmingham / Edgbaston

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Since I have stopped smoking I am feeling the rubbish on my chest and it has affected my singing. I use singing to get me warmed up and to try and get my mojo, but sometimes this doesn't work.

I want to go on a proper diet to lose weight. I have seen the dietician and I go to the gym once a week and this is enough for me at the moment because walking is a struggle for me. I know what a care plan is, this is the plan about my care and I have a care co-ordinator, but it is no using asking them for what I want which is to get out into the community. I just accept what they tell me. I'm easy. I wouldn't know what would benefit me. When you tell them, they don't know what to do, they don't want to do anything.

It's really good that you have singing as a relaxation mechanism, but I do understand the concerns you have since the introduction of non-smoking services. Everyone in Birmingham has worked really hard to implement smoke free services, and we are sure that in the long run this will be better for everyone's health and well being.

In relation to care planning, we are seeing really different experiences across site in Birmingham, and will be looking at the process to improve the standards.

If you want to discuss this further you could speak with your care coordinator, or a member of the patient experience team.

The Arts Manager read your story with interest so I am posting the following response on her behalf.

‘I am pleased to hear that singing is helping you find your mojo where it can. Are you aware that we offer music sessions as part of the Arts@StAndrew’s team in Birmingham through our Music Specialist TI? Our dedicated Music TI offers weekly sessions in music open to all patients that could help you with your singing and enjoyment. If you would like to engage further with music, do speak to the OT on your ward who can refer you to the music sessions if not already. Tina Heeley, Arts Manager.’
