I attended A&E this week and was sent to ward 103 for an Angioplasty.
Staff in A&E were excellent although my bloods were "lost" and had to be retaken. When eventually results arrived, in hindsight, I feel that the nurse practitioner advising me could have explained the results better. Simply telling me what a "normal" reading is and then giving me my score was a bit blunt. It should have had some context explained. A worrying situation was made worse by this slightly clumsy disclosure of information.
Ward 103 (base C) was wonderful. I cannot praise the doctors, nurses and other staff that dealt with me highly enough, particularly the student nurse (Rachel) who did the bulk of the contact after the procedure. But all staff were tremendous. I didn't get the name of the man on night duty, but he was so cheerful it was great.
When the time came for the op, cheerful porters took me down. A procession of staff at the theatre introduced themselves and were very professional and helpful.
The op itself was over it seemed in minutes and I was on my way after a quick re-assuring word from the consultant (Dr Uren I believe).
The food was even enjoyable.
Trying to sleep however was very difficult. Lots of noise, too much light, and many long-ringing phone calls. Probably had the worst night's sleep ever.
On my way home, I was disappointed at the pollution and smell of the smokers in the passageway out to the car park. This was decidedly unpleasant. I had seen posters in the hospital saying that smoking in the grounds was no longer permitted. Well that does not seem to be being enforced. A decidedly unpleasant atmosphere for visitors arriving and leaving, and for patients. If smoking is allowed it should not be in this area!
