"Miscarriage"

About: St John's Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

One early morning in September I started bleeding a lot so I panicked as I was what I thought 12 weeks pregnant, my 12 week scan was that following day. So I phoned St. John's hospital in Livingston they advised me to go up and get examined by a doctor but told me I wouldn't be able to get a scan that day which I wasn't bothered about I just wanted to know if my baby was okay, anyway I got there and got examined by a doctor who said to me your cervix are closed so it's not likely you are having a miscarriage. Hearing that put my mind as ease and believed my little baby was okay, my mum was with me and my partner so my mum demanded a scan they agreed to scan me in around two hours time but it was worth the wait.
Anyway when that time came I got told my baby stopped growing at 10 weeks and didn't have a little heartbeat, so I had to speak to consultants etc about the next step, they asked me if I wanted either to go home and let it come away naturally, take 2 tablets and stay in the hospital till everything came away or get it all surgically removed so I chose to get what I thought would be 2 tablets as they had said.
So they had no beds available for me that day so I was to come up they next day, that night I got home with my partner and the pain started getting worse every minute the bleeding was so bad and then the sac burst so I didn't expect that to happen as I didn't get told what would happen or what could happen so I wasn't aware this was going to happen as this was my first pregnancy, so I called the hospital and told them what I thought was happening which I thought was my waters and the person laughed saying I doubt it's your waters but if it's that sore then come up but all we can offer is paracetamol I said its okay but will I be okay until tomorrow and again they sniggered saying well I don't know but you should be, feeling so stupid and like I was bothering people I dealt with the pain until the next day.

I got to the hospital and got put in a little room with my partner, they came in and I corrected them at least 6 times because I don't think they were reading they're notes about why I was actually there.
Anyway this person all in all handed me atleast 18 tablets not mentioning what they were, I wasn't aware I was taking tablets that were going to make me tired I can't remember most of it I slept for hours and hours, but they had handed me 4 tablets to get my baby to come away etc so I put them under my tongue then swallowed them after 20 mins like they said that was before the tablets kicked in and sent me to sleep, after I woke I done the toilet once where nothing came away so back to the bed they came with another 2 tablets to try get everything away from me so another 2 down still nothing as I continued to sleep again the 3rd time they tried to get me to take another 2 I refused saying 'the consultant said I was going to take 2 simple tablets now I've taken 6 and done a pee once I'm going home' they said that was fine. So I got home and as soon as I got home my baby came away from me it was so heartbreaking.

I had a scan booked for 5 days later to see if everything had came away but that day I had sat on the toilet and tissue was coming away from me but it got stuck so I phoned the hospital I had to go up and get a doctor to remove it, my scan time came I went for my scan and the person doing the scan let me know they're were still tissue and clots to come away so they had told the nurse and I was to go speak with the nurse who said there's 2 options you wait for it to come away naturally or wait 7 days and we can surgically remove it I answered what's the option there I have to wait a whole week anyway? They said I know there's a waiting list, baring in mind I'd lost my baby that was enough, never mind going through all this on top of it.
I recently started feeling so unnwell and in pain when I was passing urine and my blood was smelly so I called the hospital I was advised to go up again, so I did and after sitting for atleast 3 hours in pain and discomfort, I was examined and told I had an infection and a urine infection and given anti biotics to go home with. But during the 3 hour wait a nurse took my temperature etc and left and when the doctor came to check me they asked if I'd had my temp done and I had said yes and the doctor said aw they haven't wrote it down, I couldn't help myself but think how silly that was. Anyway my moral of the story is, losing your baby is enough never mind getting made to feel so stupid by people who are suppose to help, my first time I didn't have a clue what to expect or what to do or how to deal with it but I feel that these members of staff, in my experience, were not very good at their job. I've ended up with 2 infections, they say they labour yes labour you get your baby home with you. A week later I'm left grieving with infections.

I am very sorry to read that you have had a miscarriage and this must be very distressing for you. I am very sorry that you are unhappy with your care and that you felt stupid after talking to some members of staff. Losing a baby is obviously a very difficult and upsetting time and we should have been more compassionate towards you.

I would be happy to discuss this further with you if you want to contact me.
