"Not disability friendly"

About: St Mary's NHS Treatment Centre (Portsmouth)

Arrived with my son as my doctors surgery was closed. As a disabled person and blue badge holder, parked as close as possible to the door. There is a new parking system in place. No signs apart from the normal ones about payment. Displayed my badge and then entered the building. Inside is a laminated sign designed on Microsoft word stating validation of parking for blue badge holders - please see staff. So I did! I was then given a pen and a small form asking for all the badge details. Not great thinking.......... As this then involved a return trip to my car and back which for me is excruciatingly painful (although I have a hidden disability and hide the pain week through years of practice!!). I was them required to fill out paperwork for my son to be seen, more trips back and forth. I only managed the seating with extreme difficulty. There were no chairs with arms or high backs anywhere in the waiting area - the ones provided did match the colour scheme but we're not ergonomic nor comfortable. They were also too low to be easy to sit and then stand back up.

My son, bless him, was more concerned about me at this point than himself! Whilst I appreciate that it can be difficult to cater for everybody's needs, surely I cannot have been the only person with a disability to use this facility? Just some thought and care into what has been asked of users of the centre and it could be a much more valuable and accessible part of the healthcare system in Portsmouth.

I am extremely sorry that your experience of the Centre was not positive. We welcome feedback on all aspects of the care we provide and I have taken note of your comments and reviewed the waiting areas in the centre.

I can now confirm that there are a number of high backed chairs with arms in each of the waiting areas. We have also noted your comments on the parking and I will ensure this is further discussed at the next Quality Improvement Forum.

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your feedback, we can now use this to make improvements that will benefit all patient.

Kind Regards

Alison Lawrence

Clinical Quality Improvement Manager
