"Rehabilitation following broken hip"

About: Arncliffe Court Nursing and Residential Home The Royal Liverpool University Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mother broke her hip just before New Year. She was in the Royal for just over a week, where we had discussions with physios about pain relief and what the follow up care was going to be. However, in the end she was discharged to Arncliffe Court, a Bupa home. There she has to our knowledge received 3 physio visits in 3 weeks. - only two have been documented. She was discharged with paracetamol for pain relief in spite of the fact this was obviously not enough in hospital and other methods where discussed (for slow, prolonged release). Arncliffe Court does not offer health care. They say they offer residential, day-to-day care only. They are not obliged to do more than encourage my mother to do the physio's exercises. She was doing the simple ones (standing up and sitting down) herself, but when it comes to trying to walk she needs more intensive and sustained help which they can't / won't give and which she certainly couldn't do without proper pain relief. It took two weeks for me to get them to address the pain issue. However, she has now developed bronchitis possibly something which wasn't helped by being left immobile for so long. As with the pain issue it took the family to point out a doctor needed to look at her.

My point is that the NHS should not be issuing contracts to private providers who are not set up to deliver the level of care needed. My mother, in her 90s,, needs more intense attention. She can't simple get up and walk by herself.

There are lots of other issues involved in this case, including how she was discharged and the level of care and attention (even at residential level) she gets at Arnclife, but the main issue is the NHS putting people in a situation where it is evident they are likely to deteriorate.

Dear MayTime

Many thanks for taking the time to share the experience that you and your mother have had. We are sorry to hear that your mother’s recovery hasn’t gone as hoped and that she now has bronchitis.

Posting on this site allows the services involved in your mother’s care to respond and hopefully address your concerns As you comment there are a lot of other issues involved in how the system works in situations like your mothers. We’d very much like to speak to you to understand more about the situation

Healthwatch Liverpool is independent of health and care services. Part of our role is to talk to people about their experiences of using services and to encourage services to improve experiences of care and help services join up more effectively. We also have an information role and may have some information that could help you as your mum hopefully improves and returns back to her home environment.

If you would be willing to do so please email us on laura.yallop@healthwatchliverpool.co.uk or call us on 0300 77 77 007. Our phoneline is staffed Monday-Friday 9-5.

With kind regards
