"I am concerned with the way my mother was treated"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 12)

(as a relative),

My mother is 77 and is sprightly lady for her age she suffers from Asthma

and manages this herself with medication and the use of nebulizer at home.

Recently my mother's health became a concern as from January of this year she became more agitated and there were many visits to the local GP.

At the end of May my mother, with a referral letter from her GP, was admitted to Hairmyres Hospital where she was placed in a holding ward.

Here she spent the weekend with what appeared not a lot being done, with the result that I got a phone call on the 3 days later to advise me, that my mother was medically fit for discharge.

One of the doctors attending when my mother approached him about discharge, made a cutting comment to my mother and was not too anxious to give his name when approached.

Having been discharged on the Monday my mother was then re-admitted by ambulance three days later

The next day I called and was advised again, that my mother was being discharged as she was medically fit! I then advised them I would be looking further in to this , as I felt it was it was blatantly obvious to any lay man that my mother was ILL! It was discovered she had and was indeed suffering from a Lung/Chest infection .

My mother's admission lasted for two weeks.

Had the infection been more serious perhaps my mother's condition may

have deteriorated and this may have caused further complications.

I am concerned in the manner in which she was treated in both wards 3&4

and the apparent manner in which the doctors dealt with my mother .

I however have the highest praise for the nursing and medical staff in Ward 12 who actually took time and cared for my mother.

However, this is not my first encounter with Hairmyres who I think need to look to their policy.
