"Turned away, unsure what to do next. Left worse..."

About: Highbury Hospital

I write this review under the understanding and assumption that Highbury, like most institutions surrounding mental health, is underfunded. I acknowledge that the hospital has limited man hours and resources available. Regardless, I have been left completely appalled by my experience with the hospital for numerous reasons. To start, I was supposedly referred to the hospital in January, due to being sent to the QMC following a suicide attempt. I did not get an appointment until just before Christmas- a month or so off a whole year waiting, for an appointment that can't have lasted longer than an hour. During this time I covered my symptoms, including suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, constant morbid thoughts surrounding random acts of violence on random people, actual acts of violence recently committed, pulled out of university due to concerns over my mental health, constant and entirely unrelenting disconnection from my surroundings and my self, audio and visual hallucinations. Left with no diagnosis, no help, after nearly a year waiting. According to this institution, the above does not qualify as evidence of mental illness. I don't find services such as Samaritans helpful, GP's get very concerned, but feel that such things are outside of their area of expertise. I'm now back to fruitlessly searching Google and the like for methods of coping with my thoughts. I accepted that I would likely die from suicide or be arrested for murder as soon I was old enough to know what death was. The experience I've had with Highbury has only further confirmed this belief. Based on this experience, to anyone reading this that has either been referred or hopes that their visit will be helpful, I recommend that you do not engage with Highbury and seek help elsewhere, if possible. The disheartening feeling of waiting for help that doesn't exist is worse than no treatment and no engagement, I assure you.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experiences relating to your care. I am very concerned about the issues you have raised. Patient experience is very important to Nottingham Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust. With this in mind I would like to investigate your care but will require more detailed information to do this as I am not clear which teams you were referred to. Please could you contact me via email or telephone so we discuss further.

Kind Regards
