"Medical Day Unit"

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

As a regular attendee for the past 5 years I have noticed that the performance of this unit is getting worse. I have to attend for a blood test, wait for results and then sometimes require a venus section.

It is not uncommon for the lab results to take 1-2 hours ( a very simple blood count) and then when the results are back to sit for another 1-2 hours while they find the time and a bed to withdraw the blood. When the lab have mis-placed my results, no-one has bothered to keep me informed. It also has a very busy chemo clinic in one of the small units and that seems to be their main focus.

The staff are very professional and mainly very friendly, just inefficient like I believe lots of the NHS to be. The appointments are made for everyone weeks in advance for all the clinics so they know how many people to expect and when, and yet they never seem to be able to manage the flow. Worse than that, they seem to take the attitude that you'll either just have to wait or leave and come back the following Friday.

Update posted by lk (the patient)

I don't know why a response came from Sefton LINk as the complaint was about the MDU at Southport DGH. I am a member of Sefton LINk. When will Southport DGH respond?

Last week the MDU had started recording all the times of the different medical procedures but the staff nurse was new and of the 10 people who attended while I was there, she could only manage to take blood from 3 people without a struggle or calling on help. The nurse in charge said they were short of staff and the transporter to the labs wasn't working.
